From instant messaging to social media, technology has transformed the life of the modern diplomat. In particular, the status of confidential negotiations has now become more ambiguous: today, diplomatic expectations and red lines are more likely to be discussed on social media than in backchannel negotiations, a development which does not make the diplomat’s job of finding a mutually acceptable compromise any easier.
